What a difference a week makes. From the despair of a last-minute defeat at Aylesbury last weekend, Teddington returned 7 days later, putting in a hugely impressive performance to pip the league leaders London Scottish Lions in a high scoring game which went right to the wire. Teddington looked sharp from the off, but it was the powerful Scottish side who took the lead from close range after 5 minutes. Teddington came back though on the quarter hour mark as they fielded a kick in their own half and got the ball quickly out wide where Harry SMITH and Josh McKIERNAN showed their pace to make inroads into the visitor’s territory before switching back inside to Max AITKEN to cross for what was the pick of the days trys. The league leaders were unfazed as they took the game straight back to the Antlers scoring 2 more trys, which Teddington responded to with a sniping score for scrum half Will MAVIN. With Scottish not having as much success with the conversions as Teddington, there was only 1 point in it. The Antlers just couldn’t keep London Scottish out of their 22 though, and when they got there, they invariably scored which happened on the half hour mark as the visitors took their lead out to 14-22. Still enough time for a couple of trys to be traded before half time with MAVIN grabbing his second of the afternoon before the Lions crashed over again on the stroke of half time. Everyone caught they breath as the sides turned around at 19-27. The second half was cagier, with Teddington using the trusty boot of Bob BEEVERS to narrow the scoreline before Scottish replied in kind. BEEVERS then slotted another penalty, meaning it was a 5-point game going into the last quarter. Teddington were looking sharp when attacking with the ball, and when AITKEN came into the line to cross for his second try of the day, the supporters were starting to believe the fortunes of the side were taking a turn for the good, but Scottish edged back in front with a penalty. Not letting their heads drop the Antlers came back determined to play rugby and create opportunities, which they did when SMITH cut back across the grain to score under the posts. A nervy final few minutes ensued, but this week the rugby gods were looking down on the hosts as they held on for an important win. With plenty of sides in the bottom half of the table finding some form, there is sure to be an exciting end to the season, but Teddington are starting to look like the side who have impressed so much over the last two seasons.
